I finished my doctoral degree in February 2015 and am no longer looking around the room for someone else when the students say Dr. Kidd. After 10 years of teaching writing, I stopped teaching for the Dalllas Community College District and began teaching Dual Credit English (Composition I and II and British Literature) for Tarrant County College. As a former high school teacher, I love the position because I teach juniors and seniors in the high schools but teach college courses, the best of two worlds. They have to pass a test and pay to attend my class (LOL). Because I move from school to school and spend so much time in the car, I tell the kids I have one rule: tell Dr. Kidd when she has not removed her sunglasses.
In February, I sold my big, old home and downgraded to a one bedroom apartment. I honestly don’t know what took me so long to sell. I am not spending Saturdays mowing the lawn, making repairs, and cleaning all day.
When I am not teaching, staring at a computer screen, attending church functions, walking my dog Wilma, reading, writing, or qulting, I spend time with my daughter Althea, her husband Dale, and my grandchildren Rachael and Charlie who live a few miles away. Robert moved to Montana to be close to his girls Emily and Elora, but I talk to them at least once a week. Life is good!
For a girl who was told by the guidance counselors that she would never make it in college, I have done well. Associates degree: Valencia Community College, Orlando; Bachelors degree, University of Central Florida, Orlando; Masters Degree, University of North Texas, Denton; Teaching Certificate, University of Texas, Arlington; and PhD, Capella University, Minneapolis.
I wish I'd paid more attention in high school (Tell your grandchildren!).
My second house would in Vermont. Many years ago, I read "Top of the Hill" by Irwin Shaw. After reading it, I wrote Mr. Shaw a letter asking him about the book. We never met, but we corresponded for a couple years until he passed away. I gave-up skiing a couple of years ago, but I still love visiting the mountains.
I get back to Venice every four or five years.
Yes, but work and distance get in the way.
Patti's Latest Interactions
Joe was the nicest guy. He sat across from me at the table in Mr. Ross's senior English class, and the truth be told, I had a terrible crush on Joe. With the tears fighting back now and the lump in my throat, I still may have one. He put up with a lot from me; I was a constant distraction in the class. I used to take my shoe off and hook my toes under his pant's hem, tucking at it. One day, my toe nail caught one of the hairs on his leg, and he flew out of the chair, yelling. He never told Mr. Ross why. (I am sure Mr. Ross already knew I was at fault.) The last day of class as we were leaving after finals, Joe gave me one of his senior pictures inscribed "To the Sweetest Girl." He probably wrote that on every picture, and if he did, don't tell me because he wrote it to me. That is the last time I saw him but have often wondered what became of him. Someone only said he left town shortly after graduation. Rest In Peace, my friend.
